100-Word Fringe: “Apply Within” at Pleasance Beside

Once you ignore its “topical” nature, Apply Within turns out to be an uplifting ode to job-hunting. We follow Joe’s progress through interview after interview, gaining confidence and the love of his life (or “like”, as one of the songs is quick to point out) along the way. The stakes are so low they’re practically interred, the set consists of three chairs and a palpable sense of panic, and Joe’s everyman status quickly devolves into “anyman” – but the whole thing is redeemed by snappy songs, a breakneck pace, and some truly outstanding supporting work that outshines the leads. Hired!

Apply Within is playing at the Pleasance Beside until August 29th.

Tickets: £8.50
