This Week In Insane Fucking Homophobia…

Gretchen Whitmer is a Michigan State Senator who has become something of a poster child (woman? lady? Senatorperson?) for gay rights over the past few days for her startling approach of logic and let’s-not-bully-children when it comes to public policy.

Her speech on the Senate floor, below, concerned a piece of legislation called “Matt’s Safe School Law” – named after a gay teen who committed suicide after an onslaught of bullying related to his sexuality. The legislation was designed to curb such harassment by enshrining anti-bullying measures into state law, but took a much more disturbing turn as Republican Senators latched on to it for some “adjustments”.

The final version that went forward included an exemption for bullying on grounds of “religious or moral conviction”, which couldn’t be more targeted at gay kids if it tried. By this logic, the children who bullied a kid like Matt would be considered entirely innocent as long as they believed that what they were doing was right. Or, you know, said they did.

Anyway, the video is below, and I heartily encourage you to send your support to Sen. Whitmer on her Twitter or on Facebook. The term “religious freedom” has become a synonym for harassment these past few years, be it through religious exemptions on gay marriage or contraception or whatever passages of the Bible are in this week.

Freedom is a personal right. “Religious freedom”, as practised by these politicians, is an excuse to impose your beliefs on others while pushing some kids to the brink of death.
