100-Word Review: “Young Adult”

This writer-of-Juno dramedy stars Charlize Theron as Mavis, a teen fiction author who returns to her home town to recapture her ex. What could have been a mess of Juno vs. Up In The Air (Jason Reitman directs) vs. Tall South African styles instead falls down for being under-stuffed – and by the end it feels like the first act of a film stretched over 90 minutes. Mavis doesn’t change, but also nobody else is really explored – and even Patton Oswalt’s admirable turn as a former and current unpopular schoolfriend feels gimmicky for its shallow exploration. Sweet Valley superficial.
