100-Word Review: “Live Action Oscar Shorts”

Five nominees, one hundred words. Dare I? Should I? What’s that? Who’s there? Are you there, God? It’s me, The Tree Of Life.

Pentecost – Ireland

A peppy story about an altar boy’s attempts to not fuck up, Pentecost has smooth, entertaining performances that raise chuckles.

Raju – Germany / India

Two parents struggle to adopt a young Indian boy in this depressing, if slightly overwrought, take on a difficult reality.

The Shore – Ireland (WINNER)

At ease with itself but overlong, The Shore takes a look at a returning emigrant’s reconnection with those he spurned.

Time Freak – USA

A sugary – if limited – treat, Time Freak is a slice of time travelling “could haves” buoyed by some great editing.

Tuba Atlantic – Norway

A dying man, a giant tuba, and a well-meaning teen collide in the off-kilter and disconnected – but interesting – Tuba Atlantic.
